KDE 4.2/Linux beats Vista

Actually I am happy with most operating systems. I am good to use MacOS, Windows XP, Linux with either a KDE or GNOME Window Manager.

The issue I have is with Vista. Actually, if you do use it I am sure you'd agree that it has a pleasant interface. Not sure you will need this gadgets, but its still nice. The issue comes with some of its inherent problems. Resource consumption on even the most powerful PC or Laptop, stability issues, changing WLAN/LAN issues and what not. Even Microsoft agrees and is focusing on its Windows 7 agenda.

Now, I just upgrade to KDE4.2 on Kubuntu 8.10. Now this is a "beta" upgrade and not yet officially rolled out. I just wanted to try it. In the last few years using Kubuntu as my working operating system on my various company laptops. I came to trust Kubuntu and the community to figure our issues before I do.

Windows 7: The Linux Killer

ZDNET runs a story that Windows 7 is the Linux Killer. The story goes, that Microsoft is worried about Netbooks.

Vista does not run on Netbooks, because the hardware requirements are to high - now I know why I never saw one offered with Vista! Asus started with Linux and later offered Windows XP as well. Now it seems the moving forward for Windows 7 schedule addresses the worries about the Vista Weakness and the upsdie for MacOS and Linux.

Here is the link to the story: http://blogs.zdnet.com/community/?p=151

I saw multiple print/online articles with similar messages.

I started in 2007 to use Linux on the Desktop/Laptop. No one at that time talked about Linux being important at all on the Desktop and no one cared about a few geeks and some thin-clients in corporations running on Linux.

Predictions Review 2009 - 5 out of 5!

On January 4th 2009, I wrote the following predictions for 2009! I added this text now, with what really happened!

1.) Mobile Platforms
Prediction on January 4th 2009:

The Next Genaration iPhone bring apple to 90% Markt Share in the Smart Phone Market. Users state, the key reason for buy it is the superior usability of the operating system. In other words: The Lack of Mobile Killer Applications, is not the missing software, but the poor usability of phones in the past!

What happened?
Apple did not manage to get 90% market share, but has significant smart phone market share.  Motorla, Sony Ericison, and Nokia are in full retreat. Their current platforms do not allow them to play on that level. Especially Nokia has been hard hit with their very dated existing operating system platform a catch seems not feasible.

KUbuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Beta - First Thoughts

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to use Kubuntu 8.10 Beta.

I used the upgrade features - running Kubuntu 8.04 - and it took about 3-4 hours for the Laptop to be ready with 8.10. No work, no reinstalling software, nothing ... It just worked.

This release again, fine tuned prior releases. We can see how Ubuntu is becoming every step more mature. It works excellently on my laptop with all the usual office and INTERNET application. Some User Interface Innovations (Mouse Pointer, Network Manager, Menu Ribbon, etc.) make it even more interesting.

There was no need to use the command line or terminal at all - for nothing.
